Broadcast

Broadcast in networking refers to the transmission of data from one device to all devices within a specific network segment. In a broadcast, the sending device sends a packet to a special broadcast address, and all devices on the network that are within that broadcast domain receive the packet. This is commonly used in local area networks (LANs) for tasks like locating devices, distributing network configuration information (such as IP addresses via DHCP), or sending out network service announcements. Broadcasting can be efficient for certain types of communication, but excessive broadcasting can lead to network congestion, known as a “broadcast storm.” Broadcasts are limited to the local network and do not typically pass through routers to other networks.
